Capturing Ordinary Moments on Ordinary Days

The power of small snapshots for big stories.

On my daughter’s last day of kindergarten, her teacher Mrs. Atkinson handed every teary-eyed parent a yearbook.

Not the kind with glossy pages and professional photos, but the scrappy, made-by-hand-and-with-a-whole-lotta-heart — each page filled with prints of my daughter.

Turns out, Mrs. Atkinson did so much more than teach phonograms and recitations to a class of eager six year olds. She also quietly, and purposefully, snapped photos of ordinary moments on ordinary days.

Nursery rhyme dress-up day (check).
Valentine's Day party (check).
The first time my daughter traversed the monkey bars all by herself (check and check).

Come May, Mrs. Atkinson spent hours curating those images into personalized memory books for each student.

That simple gesture — done without fanfare, without budget, and without any expectation — surprised and delighted me far more than any Hallmark keepsake ever could.

Mrs. Atkinson for the win, I dare say.

The book now lives in the top drawer of my nightstand — tucked alongside my favorite kid drawings and a small collection of prayer cards.

It’s one of my biggest treasures and a reminder that creating delight for others doesn’t require perfection. It requires intention.

It made me wonder — where in business (or life) could we swap polish for presence and still create something that leaves people feeling loved and remembered?

  • The invitation to meet in person, even if it means driving 30 minutes.
  • The handwritten thank-you note after someone shares meaningful advice.
  • The unexpected follow-up that proves you were actually listening (no, really).

None of these gestures need a budget or a marketing plan.

They’re simply ordinary moments of delight — intentionally woven into ordinary days.
